The Columbia river sea lions diet consists 80% of industry introduced "non native" fish(shad, pike, hatchery, walleye) that have been introduced into the Columbia and the Willamette rivers for the sport fishermen.
The National Marine Fisheries Study 2009 found that the introduction of these non native fish for the sport fishing industry are the number ONE threat to the Endangered Salmon on these rivers not the Sea Lion. It is because of the sport fishing industry and their powerful lobbyist that all endangered salmon and sea lions are being put in danger. Already, on the verge of species collapse in 13 runs of salmon, and including the Endangered stellar sea lions. All because of the sport of ripping lips-- off salmon, so they can gut them and eat them. Because humans with all the money, and the biggest killers of salmon have allocated all the fish on the Columbia and the Willamette rivers for themselves.

And they are so greedy that they will kill the native sea lion for eating a mere 1% of the salmon run. When 80% of his diet consists of non native sport fish the sea lion is doing the native endangered salmon a favor . Oregon should embrace their sea lions and protect the salmon by pulling gill nets off the Columbia river. Enforce tighter harvest regulation of Ocean trawlers and sport fishermen. They should not be able to take 17% of the fish, and then point the gun at the sea lion who needs these fish for sustenance not sport.Third again Stop killing sea lions because the salmon and the sea lion grow together, and what you do to one you are doing to the other.

So it is really simple-- if you want to save the salmon-- stop killing them, and embrace their river brothers-- the sea lions and we all will all benefit. The whole Eco-System will prospers, not just the extractors.
