Monarch butterfly (Danau plexippus): In the summer of 2012, over the course of 30 days, I reared the beautiful monarch butterfly named "Penelope" from an egg found on a milkweed leaf in a nearby field. Throughout the experience, video footage was captured of her metamorphosis, from egg to adult, and then her release. Monarch eggs can be found in Michigan starting in early summer until early August. Typically, the population will have four genrations over the course of the summer season. If you have the means to raise one yourself, I highly recommend this rewarding experience! If you do not have monarchs in your region during their egg laying season, there are multiple companies that will provide you with eggs through the postal service for very affordable prices!
