MONTGOMERY, Ohio (WKRC) - Rabbi Miriam Terlinchamp is back home after spending a few days in Texas at the Mexican border. She and more than 120 other Jewish leaders joined arms with other clergy calling for change at the detention center in Tornillo.

Terlinchamp says the group was not given permission to enter the facility but did see three buses.

“The first bus had children on it, the second bus had the windows covered so we couldn’t see who was in there. The third was empty,” said Terlinchamp.

Despite not being allowed inside, Terlinchamp says some people did walk around the facility and saw some teens on the other side of the fence.

“A group went around and saw children and then were chased from that spot by law enforcement and locals,” said Terlinchamp.

Many in the group also went to the border bridge but didn’t see anyone trying to cross.

“You can see that sweeping emptiness of the bridge as a positive thing. That these people are in shelters and not sleeping on a bridge with children,” said Terlinchamp.

Pastor Alan Dickens of Carthage Christian Church was also on the trip. He and Terlinchamp helped at shelters in El Paso, giving the volunteers who run the shelters a break.

On the way back home, Terlinchamp says access to the detention was granted and there will be a return trip to Texas in the near future.
