African health authorities are scrambling to contain a plague that's already killed at least 124 people in Madagascar. More than 1,300 cases have been reported. The outbreak is especially worrying since it started earlier in the season compared to previous outbreaks, and it's reached Madagascar's two most populated urban areas. The World Health Organisation has placed nine other countries on alert for a possible outbreak due to their ties with Madagascar. These include South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. The W.H.O. says the risk of a regional spread is moderate -- while the global threat is low.
