A group of local community members gathered in Hampshire, UK to get a glimpse of the expected solar eclipse this week, and despite the grey skies above, everyone got some great expert insight by organisers of the gathering, the Basingstoke Astronomy Society.

Alan Lorraine, Chairman from BAS in Hampshire told us:

"Whilst the solar eclipse was happening this morning and despite the clouds above in the sky, the light from the sun is being diminished by the moon and as a result and the temperature is also dropping slightly so making it colder."

Members from the BAS group were also measuring the light levels during the morning which were diminishing ever so slightly, yet not as clearly as would have hoped by all the local community members who woke up early and huddled together to get a glimpse.

One of the local community members said:

"I actually remember when the last solar eclipse was visible for us in the UK back in August 1999, and I remembered how eerie, yet incredibly beautiful the moment was. I also remember how even the birds went silent whilst the eclipse took place!"

Despite the lack of visibility due to the clouds, everyone certainly learnt a great deal from the Astronomy experts from BAS.
