The city of Cheltenham had much to celebrate after this weekend as the worlds biggest group of people Jived simultaneously outdoors in the middle of its town centre.
A minimum of at least 1,000 people were needed to ensure the group was in fact the biggest having gathered previously and despite the rain and winds, thanks to the aftermath of Hurricane Bertha across the UK, the attempt was successful and verified on the day by officials as 1,043 people in total.
Organizers from Cheltenham Town Hall had set themselves a target to teach as many people to jive as possible leading up to the day. In the run up to the event, local dance teachers from 'Jazz Jive Swing' group taught over 300 people to jive in preparation for the attempt, at a series of free jive classes, aimed to help people prepare and be confident to take part in the event.
Jen Rudman and Patricia Cressey were two of the dancers jiving on the day and they said:

“Well we did it!!! It was a great day, even though it was pouring down with rain. Brilliant, to achieve an official world record in the UK… and everyone is used to the rain here so to dance in it was no problem! The fact that we also did it for a great charity was even better!”

The day raised money for charity 'Winston's Wish' which is the leading childhood bereavement charity in the UK.
