East Jerusalem's economy has been suffocated in recent years, with Israeli checkpoints and the Wall restricting trade and movement in the city's Palestinian neighbourhoods. 40% of Palestinian men and a massive 85% of women in the city are now unemployed, with a traditional patriarchal society further limiting women's opportunities to find work. Oxfam partner PARC (the Palestinian Agricultural Development Association) is providing women with training and support to set up their own small businesses to support themselves and their children. Nuha Sharabati and her local women's group now run a thriving bakery, which helps members save money and loan to each other to start up businesses.
