CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A simple swap in America's diet could make a big difference in the future of health.

The latest study in the Journal of Nutrition suggests that consumers should swap from white to wheat. The journal explains that the slight change may make a significant difference in whether or not a person will develop type 2 diabetes.

It appears it's the fiber in grains that control blood sugar levels. Specialists at the Cleveland Clinic said grains are harder to break down than processed grain, which helps the body's insulin response. Insulin is a hormone that helps balance blood sugar levels.

The study looked at more than 55,000 participants between the ages of 50 and 65.

Researchers found the highest whole-grain intake among men was associated with a 34 percent decreased risk of type 2 diabetes. Women who ate the most whole grains saw a 22 percent decreased risk. Whole grains are in many foods including corn, rye and oats.

The magic number for reducing risk according to UC Berkely wellness experts is about four servings a day.

Nobody is 100 percent sure if eating these foods early in life will make a difference in reducing risk, but it likely won't hurt because they are packed with other whole grains and nutrients that body needs.

A serving size is one slice of bread and a half-cup of pasta, so it doesn't take much to get what you need.
