Truck Nearly Crushes Man; Police Offer Safety Tips

Some tense moments last Saturday when a man was trapped beneath an ice truck, weighing more than a ton.Tom Woodruff was on a round for Tennessee Valley ice company, when he tried to remove the drive shaft. But that's where things went wrong.While parked on a hill, Woodruff got underneath his truck loaded with ice without chocking the wheels. Woodruff's wife, Cinceria Woodruff, was across town and sensed something was wrong. When you get that call that they are being lifeforced, you don't know how bad or if they're still alive or whatever. He was wanting to get it fixed. Get his ice route run and this all happened getting in a hurry and trying to get done and it fell on him.First Responders arrived quickly- using air bags to lift the frame of the truck. Soddy Daisy Fire Chief, Mike Guffey, tell us that the rear axle and spring hangers had him pinned to the ground.Life Force flew Woodruff to Erlanger. Now, he remains in their ICU Trauma center unable to speak. He's still here and fighting for his life. He's got 11 broken ribs and 7 on the other side, a punctured lung and on a venilator, says Woodruff.Police say this type of accident could have been prevented by parking on a level spot and chocking the wheels.Tom Woodruff doesn't have insurance and his family will have to foot the bills themselves. Of course, those medical bills are expected to reach six figures and they are hoping to receive donations.by Mikaya Thurmond
