Rescued sea otter x-rays show injuries

The Vancouver Aquarium's veterinary intern, Kelly Britt, deciphers a sea otter's x-rays. Whiffen was rescued after being found unresponsive on Whiffen Spit in Sooke, Vancouver Island.
 
Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre staff, along with a team from the BCSPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre, rescued this critically injured sea otter on February 23, 2014. He was transferred to the Rescue Centre where he underwent testing. Tests showed that he was hypoglycemic, a sign that he had not been meeting his daily caloric requirement for some time. He was extremely emaciated and appeared to have injuries to his hind flippers (confirmed by the x-rays).
 
Whiffen is currently under 24-hour care. Rescue staff and Aquarium veterinarians are doing everything they can to ensure he has the best chance for a successful rehabilitation for the eventual release back into local waters.
