Approximately 13 California sea lions were trapped and hot iron branded in the East Mooring Basin in Astoria, Oregon. On August 13, 2016 California sea lion branded X_546 by ODFW the day before appeared to be in pain and suffering from his State inflicted hot iron brand wounds. ODFW and NMFS claim that trapping and hot iron branding does not hurt the sea lions and SLDB observers report otherwise. The Sea lions have been hauling out in the East Mooring Basin for over twenty five years. They are loved worldwide and attract thousands of people to the EMB yearly to visit them. ODFW began trapping and branding sea lions in 1996. In the Spring from March 15 through May 31 California sea lions are trapped and killed if identified consuming one salmon in five years out of the Columbia River and for being in the area for five days below the Bonneville Dam.
