Freely behaving NMDA receptors: neuronal NMDA receptors were characterized with several frozen X-ray and cryoEM structures, but their dynamics in vivo are even more difficult to study. The article by Sinitskiy and Pande (https://www.cell.com/biophysj/fulltext/S0006-3495(18)30728-8) in the September 4 issue of Biophysical Journal reports on large-scale computer simulations of NMDARs, revealing their rich structural heterogeneity and fast dynamics.
