A gargantuan sunspot crosses the Earth-strike zone this week, but despite 2 X-class flares and nearly 10 M-class flares, no Earth-directed solar storm has been launched yet. The only storm this active region launched was back on October 14 when it sent a storm towards Mars for a rendezvous with Comet Siding Spring. Still, between this flare activity and an extended coronal hole sending us fast solar wind, we have many chances for GPS and satellite phone-radio-internet disruptions as well as aurora possibilities over the coming week. Ham radio operators might also get a bit frustrated with the numerous radio blackouts on the sunlit side of the Earth due to the extensive flaring. Learn details of how this activity might affect you and what else the Sun has in store for us this week.
