Written by City News Service - A drug-possession suspect being treated in the
Centinela Hospital Medical Center emergency room in Inglewood was shot to death
today by a sheriff's deputy after he tried to grab another deputy's firearm.
Neither deputy was injured in the shooting, which took place at 1:10
a.m. at the hospital at 555 E. Hardy St., according to the Sheriff's
Department.
The 27-year-old suspect had been in custody at the sheriff's South Los
Angeles Station after his arrest around 2:35 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of
possession of a controlled substance, sheriff's Lt. Holly Francisco told
reporters outside the hospital.
The suspect, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives,
had an unspecified medical need and firefighters who went to the station
recommended he visit the emergency room, Francisco said.
The man was accompanied by two deputies and had one wrist handcuffed to
a gurney in a room assigned for triage of incoming patients when the shooting
occurred.
``Using his free hand, the suspect grabbed a deputy's gun,'' sheriff's
Deputy Kim Manatt said. ``Fearing for his safety and his partner's safety, a
second deputy fired his weapon at the suspect. The suspect was hit and was
pronounced dead at the scene.''
Sheriff's homicide detectives were sent to the hospital to investigate.
As is standard in deputy-involved shootings in which a suspect is
struck, the shooting also will be investigated by the Los Angeles County
District Attorney's office, the sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau and the Los
Angeles Office of Independent Review. Additionally, it will be reviewed by the
sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee, according to the Sheriff's
Department. LOUDLABS NEWS
