Written by City News Service - Authorities today were investigating the fatal
 officer-involved shooting of a gunman who was killed after he allegedly
 approached plainclothes officers in the Pico-Union district.
    No officers were injured in the shooting, which occurred around 9 p.m.
 Tuesday near Pico Boulevard and Bonnie Brae Street, said Officer Christopher No
 of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section. The suspect
 died at the scene, he said, adding that at least one other suspect escaped and
 remained at large.
    The male who was killed was armed with a gun when he walked up to
 plainclothes officers driving in the 1700 block of Pico Boulevard, prompting
 the officer-involved shooting, said Officer Rosario Herrera, also of the LAPD's
 Media Relations Section. The suspect and officers exchanged gunfire, according
 to a broadcast report.
    The shooting happened outside a church where a service was taking place
 and police were questioning those who were inside as they searched for
 additional suspects, LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez said at the scene.
    The suspect's body was visible lying face up on the sidewalk near a
 white sedan with its driver-side door open, a news photographer reported from
 the scene.
    The shooting will be investigated by the Los Angeles County District
 Attorney's Office as well as the County Office of Independent Review, which is
