Student at Franklin Junior High tests positive for tuberculosis

FRANKLIN, Ohio (WKRC) - Franklin City Schools announced on Sunday that the district learned on Friday of a student at Franklin Junior High School in Franklin tested positive for tuberculosis and responded by notifying the Warren County Combined Health District.

Since the germ in TB can only survive for up to four hours (and is usually only transmitted indoors as sunlight kills the germ), the district was advised that it is safe to operate as normal on Monday, Sept. 10. However, as an extra precaution, the Franklin Junior High building was thoroughly cleaned and sanitized on Sunday by school personnel.

The district also says the affected student will not return to the school until cleared by a physician. In addition, the district says that the Warren County Health Department is in contact with Dayton's Children's Infectious Disease Team in case the district needs to take any additional precautions.

Symptoms of TB include: feelings of sickness or weakness, weight loss, fever, and night sweats. If disease is in the lungs, symptoms can include coughing, chest pain, and coughing up blood.
