The role of Don Alfonso in Mercadante's "Caritea, regina di Spagna" was originally created by the famous robust tenor of Domenico Donzelli who, arguably, is the main point of interest in the opera. His huge presence in other places notwithstanding, he is given two full arias, the second of which is presented here.

The piece is a most difficult one vocally, though pretty straightforward dramatically: Alfonso is barely able to keep his feelings for Caritea (for whatever reason, they haven't really had an opportunity to get to know each other); his chorus of soldiers cuts in, asking him for some sort of decision; he finally, rather reluctantly, gives in and begins a call-to-arms. The aria is basically set to a classical three piece structure but our interest is kept high by sudden harmonical and orchestral changes. The opening section finds Alfonso first scorning the object of his affection, only to understand that he loves her (presented in a more minor musical atmosphere). Interestingly, his arioso is cut short by the chorus, rather than being sung complete before the entrance of the soldiers. A short but intense andante with a most rich musical background employing flutes, clarinets and rich strings finds Alfonso again tortured by his feelings. The cabaletta, sung as Alfonso has decided to aim his fury at his main rival, Diego, is by turns a bit too mushy and jolly but the coda is brilliant, bringing a piece well-worth an additional listen to a close.

Jacek Laszczkowski makes a most believably human Alfonso. Enjoy :)!
