The rule number of a Less-Equal-Greater Cellular Automata (LEG CA) determines how a cell's value changes in relationship to its immediate neighbors. The plot normalizes the values so they are displayed in the same gray range. The specific relationship between a cell and its neighbors is whether the center cell is less, equal, or greater than each of its two neighbors, making a total of nine conditions. Unlike a usual cellular automaton, the states can take arbitrary values, especially since the update rule involves addition.
