Schools in East Jerusalem are often overcrowded and in poor condition, neglected by the city's authorities. While 30% of Jerusalem's school-aged children are Palestinian, these neighbourhoods receive only 10% of the education budget. The Israeli government rarely issues permits to build new schools in Palestinian areas. Oxfam partner Al Juzoor is renovating 10 schools in East Jerusalem to provide a better learning environment for the city's children.
