It is quite unfortunate that sea lions have been unjustly labeled as causing a significant impact on salmon recovery while, drought, warm water, clear cuts, habitat loss, hydro power, hatcheries, and the maximization of the harvest are by far more detrimental to wild salmon and wild salmon recovery efforts than the sea lions consuming some fish out of the Columbia River at the Bonneville Dam.

Moreover, for the last 150 years Mercury, PCB's, Dioxins, PAH's and many other endocrine disrupting chemicals have been left to linger degrading the Columbia River habitat . Let us not forget that Copper has been found throughout the Columbia River estuary which can inhibit the salmons ability to navigate back to their natal spawning habitat. In addition, Pesticides, household chemicals, cleaners and pharmaceuticals enter our waterways yearly which are known to kill fish.

In conclusion, California sea lions have been, trapped, branded and killed for consuming as little as one fish in five years at the Bonneville Dam while the bigger impacts facing wild salmon and wild salmon recovery efforts are left unaddressed. Therefore it is time to focus our attention on the bigger impacts facing wild salmon and stop scapegoating sea lions for consuming fish out of the Columbia River at the Bonneville Dam which will not save the salmon--- before it is too late.
