Perez was defending his employer at the DeYoung residence on the hilltop off the Prayer Mountain Road because four armed thieves had accosted a thirty-six-year-old American woman and her two children. During the struggle with the robbers, Perez was stabbed as many as twelve times to the body with a knife, before one of the thieves struck him across the head with the shovel. The burglars got away with electronic devices and an undisclosed amount of cash, but not before the owner and one of her sons were assaulted. ACP Joseph Myvett confirmed that this is the second such incident in two months at the DeYoung residence.
