Early in the morning on September 09, 2016 approximately 20 California sea lions were trapped and those not already branded were subjected to four glowing hot irons apiece, SLDB observers report. "He is on fire," a onlooker said as the flames erupted from the sea lion's back. The smoke and the smell of burning flesh filled the air while visitors to the East Mooring Basin looked on in horror as the sea lions are forced one at a time into the squeeze cage. California sea lions have been observed still bleeding from their State inflicted brand wounds a year after receiving them. In addition, sea lions have suffered internal injuries during the trapping process when the smaller animals get pinned and squished under the weight of the larger ones. This resulted in the death of two California sea lions that were not on the State's lethal removal list-- Spring of 2015 at the Bonneville Dam. On the other hand, ODFW and NMFS claim that trapping and hot iron branding sea lions does not hurt them or disrupt their normal behavior and SLDB observers report otherwise. Moreover, the sea lions are a very important part of the Pacific Northwest ecology and it is the sea lion that has the ancient relationship with the wild fish and the Columbia River that Dams, clear cuts, toxics, and Bakken oil trains don't. In conclusion the sea lions impacts on salmon are minimal compared to the Dams, warm water , drought, water exports for big agriculture, clear cuts, hatchery and NIS fish, the harvest, habitat loss, endocrine disrupting chemicals such as PCB’s, PAH’s, pesticides, herbicides and heavy metals such as Mercury & Copper. And we can not forget pharmaceuticals, household cleaners, oil, and toxic road run off coupled with the thousands of blocked fish passages and unscreened culverts and water diversions that remain unaddressed across Oregon and Washington State. ************************************************************************************************************************ We all deserve to eat.
