"Kalarash" performed by Metropolitan Klezmer at Drom NYC - night before Passover 2009. The fast dance kicks in very near the top! Ismail Butera: accordion, Pam Fleming: trumpet & (zhok prelude) flugelhorn, Michael Hiss: violin, Dave Hofstra: tuba, Debra Kreisberg: clarinet, Reut Regev: trombone, Eve Sicular: drums, leader.

Traditional folk processional tune (excerpt) followed by wedding dance. The title, as taken from a Naftule Brandwein 1922 Columbia recording, is likely based on the name "Kalderash," a subgroup of the Roma or 'Gypsy' people, many of whom ('kalderash' is related to the word meaning "cauldron makers" in Rumanian, Balkan & Slavic languages, since many worked as coppersmiths in these regions). Befitting this fiery, fast-paced brew.

Thanks to Rich Brotman & Sasha Wortzel for camerawork, and to Rich for editing at Magnetic Post.

Metropoiltan Klezmer's recordings of this tune appear on two of our cd's (studio & live tracks!)
