http://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/building_codes/index.html Try to avoid asking questions to the building or planning departments over the phone, because this could create problems for your home construction project in the future. One time I contacted a building department official who gave me some advice that sounded good, but the building inspector didn't agree. When the building inspector asked me for the name of the person working at the building department who gave me this advice, I didn't have it. Don't get caught in this trap and tried to get everything you can in writing, before applying this information to your construction project. If the building department official isn't going to give you any information in writing, try to find out how you can solve your problem another way.
