Spend some time with Mark and Bob as they see just how tough AR500 steel gongs really are. Matt at Steel Horse Customs in Newberg, Oregon was gracious enough to donate a gong to help quench their thirst for knowledge.

First they start out with a powerful 44 Magnum Carbine Saddle Gun popular in cowboy action shooting and work all the way up to a 300 Winchester Magnum.

The rifles they use in this video include:

Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Gun chambered in .44 Mag.

Marlin Model 1895 Guide Gun chambered in .45-70 (405 gr. bullets)

Springfield Armory M1 Garand chambered in .30-06
(3 different rounds are used in the .30-06. Standard lead tipped hunting ammunition, M2 Ball and some vintage 1944 WWII AP Armor Piercing)

AR15 chambered in 5.56/.223
(Ammunition used is 5.56 Penetrator XM855)

AR-15 chambered in 7.62x39 (steel core ammo)

M44 Mosin Nagant 7.62x54r (steel core ammo)

.300 Winchester Magnum

So what's the verdict? Were they able to blast their way through this armor? Watch and see the surprising results.

So what is AR500 you ask? AR500F steel plate is a premium abrasion resistant steel plate, heat treated to exhibit through-hardening, improved forming and welding capabilities. With a typical BHN of 460 -- 544, the protection AR500F provides in wear applications is exceptional. Used in the manufacture of mining equipment, the truck-trailer industry and the concrete / aggregate industry, AR500F steel possesses excellent resistance to slide wear, rub wear and heavy wear. It can also withstand high impact stresses, even at extremely low temperatures.
