Securing data used to describe past, present and future conditions in the oceans ultimately feeds into decision-making processes. Here, Australian oceanographer Steve Rintoul describes the benefits of building an understanding in ocean and climate science. A scientist at CSIRO and the Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems Cooperative Research centre, he was interviewed in January, 2012 aboard the Australian Government's Antarctic re-supply vessel, Aurora Australisby PhD student Nick Roden.
