In case you were not aware CRITFC was paid $ 902 million dollars to turn their backs on the decimating impacts BPA Dams cause for the esa salmon and esa salmon habitat under the 2008 Columbia River Fish Accords. Coincidentally that is the same year they allocated two million dollars to pick up the gun to wage war on the sea lions instead of the BPA and their dams. Since 2008 when the sea lion scapegoating lethal removal of California sea lions for consuming some fish out of the Columbia River below the Bonneville Dam began there has been no measurable outcome and increase in esa wild salmon populations. Moreover the endangered runs still consist of 80% hatchery fish no matter how many sea lions killed. In addition last year thousands and thousands of salmon perished in lethal warm water conditions which now plague the Columbia River and other waterways in the bio region. It is concerning that that the Columbia River estuary and other water ways in the bio region no longer even meet EPA benchmarks to support and sustain cold water fish. Therefore it is time to stop wasting tax dollars, blaming, bombing and killing sea lions for consuming some salmon out of the Columbia River below the Bonneville Dam. Our money will be better spent addressing the ultimate causes of esa salmon mortality in the region such as rising water temperatures, deadbeat dams, and the lack of adequate flow of water over them, thousands of currently blocked fish passages. Not forgetting all the currently unscreened culverts and water diversions that need to be screened across Oregon and Washington State and the myriad of toxics invading our waterways such as endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides, PCB's, dioxins, PAH's ,mercury, copper and dangerous road run off in which all of these can be lethal for esa salmon. In the end addressing the ultimate causes of esa salmon mortality verses scapegoating and killing sea lions for consuming some salmon out of the Columbia River below the Bonneville Dam will actually protect the wild salmon and provide cost effective and measurable results for their wild salmon recovery efforts that scapegoating and killing sea lions under the guise of saving the salmon can never do.
