The Simple Past
The Past Tense (V2): 
USAGE
It is used to express an action completed in the past. 
Examples: 
• I saw Taj Mahal last week.
 Note: for all the subjects’ verb will be in V2 form
 ‘Did’ is used as helping verb in simple past tense.
 Rule: The words ‘was’ and ‘were’ are the simple past forms of the verb ‘be’
 ‘Was’ is used with singular subjects like I, he, she, it in past tense.
 ‘Were’ is used with plural subjects like you, we, they in simple past tense. 
Examples:
• When I was younger, I played with teddy bears.
• Ten years ago, I was a baby (indication)
• You were dishonest to me! 
• Those were my best jeans.


 To express a past habit:
 Examples:
• Every morning, Gandhi ji went for a walk. 
• Every evening, I went for a walk. 
 Time indication: yesterday, long ago, long back, before, earlier, last week / night / month / year, completed month / year 
Form / structure: Subject + V2 + object + indication Subject + was / were + object + indication 
 Singular Plural First person I + V2 We + V2 
 Second person You + V2  You + V2 
 Third person  He + V2 She + V2  It + V2  They + V2  
 Positive : I went to market yesterday  
 Negative : I did not go to market yesterday
 Question : Did I go to market yesterday
