Annual Fourth of July 5K honors memory of boy who died from brain cancer

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - Get up and get moving for a great cause this Fourth of July.

Runners and walkers will hit the pavement for the Pray Hope Believe 5K in Colerain Township. With every step, the people participating in this run will raise money for pediatric brain tumor research. The run started at 8:30 a.m. at the Colerain Township Municipal Complex on Springdale Road after a flag raising ceremony at 8:15 a.m.

This 5K is in memory of Tony Merk, a 6-year-old boy who died on July 4, 2011 after an almost three-year battle with brain cancer. This is the seventh year for the 5K.

In the last six years, this event has done so much for pediatric brain cancer research, raising $325,000.

This year, more than 1,300 runners and walkers signed up for the run.

There will also be a split-the-pot, raffles and a balloon release after the race
