Because social interactions are mutual, it has been difficult to disentangle the exact sensory cues driving such behaviors. Larsch and Baier used a virtual reality approach to deconstruct the visual experience during zebrafish shoaling behavior and extract the "sensory essence" of a shoal mate. They identified the fishes' characteristic motion as a fundamental cue that induced social affiliation. Check out the paper at http://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(18)31209-0. J.
