A tragic incident happened recently. A friend of mine sent me a screenshot of a Facebook post from one of her friends. It appeared to be a rant, but when I read deeper, the message was of despair, hopelessness and disappointment. He expressed how he’d been terminated after allegedly using up all of his Sick Leave for the year even though 1. He was under his sick leave count and 2. He was misdiagnosed by the company doctor (which then implies that the reason he never had a chance to recover from his condition is because the doctor had been treating a condition he didn’t have). By the way, he’d been working for this company for over 8 and a half years. Two weeks later, my friend who sent me the screenshot of that Facebook post reported that this person had passed away. The word on the street was that he had committed suicide. One of the hashtags he used in his original post was #depression. I have no words. My heart broke. Later on, I had spoken with an ex-colleague, and we brought up the incident. He said, “I knew him. I flew with him…I hope my friends leave soon”. I said “do they want to?” He said “yes”. I said “why do you think they haven’t left yet?” He said “because they’re scared”. I knew exactly why. No one knows what the world holds for you after you leave a “comfortable” job which provides you an all-expenses paid apartment, transportation, access to 5-star hotels, resorts and restaurants and discounted international travel. I mean…how do you beat that? Not only could I relate to the dilemma, but I actually lived through the dire tribulations of a career transition…except it went beyond a career transition. I moved countries, stripped myself of the identity I had and found myself so so SO far away from what I thought my dreams were. And I did this in the midst of depression. In my eyes, they had everything to fear. …But also - in my eyes, they have everything to gain. The bottom line of this video is the fact that our minds, hearts and souls will give us every indication that it is time for us to go…to go and dive into the deep, to go against the grain, and then face a reality that had no guarantee of happiness and success. But sometimes the comforts are just too good. Comforts paired with fear equals stuck. I know the feeling of being stuck in misery and dealing with misery by sleeping, drinking and a bit of delusion. I KNEW in theory that something had to change and my fantasies said that change would be a delightful walk in the park. Luckily, those fantasies gave me the courage to leave, because if anyone would have told me it would be hard, maybe I would have been lured to stay for even longer. This video outlines the signs that our bodies, minds and souls give us. And then it provides a few steps to build your courage to leave the job that you identify with as toxic and uninspired. While I don’t have the full context to your life, and therefore don’t feel in the position to PUSH you to leave, I do know that I can pay forward some steps to reshape your mind, and therefore rebuild your reality. One major thing was missing from my experience as ex-cabin crew, and that was support. I needed support to prepare me - mentally and emotionally for what was to come. And my hope is that this video provides that for those who are yet to discover that the courage is within, and that your resilience sits there right with it. Godspeed, my friends.
