Outgoing Costa Mesa City Councilmember James "Jim" Righeimer bids farewell to the Costa Mesa City Council that he has served for eight years as he is termed out. Righeimer, originally from Illinois, moved to Costa Mesa from Fountain Valley in 2006, first ran for city council in 2008, ran a second time in 2010 and was elected, then was reelected in 2014. He had the endorsement of the Orange County Republican Party. On his last day on the council, he received special recognition for his years of service. He, along with former councilmember Steve Mensinger, was among the most conservative members of the council. During his time on the council, he often clashed with his more liberal colleagues and has often angered public service employees, as well as unions representing them, along with unions representing the police and firefighters. The police union hated Righeimer so much, a now-defunct law firm that used to represent them staged a false drunk driving accusation against Righeimer. This lead to the accuser getting arrested and to Righeimer and Mensinger suing the police union. The two men eventually settled with the union out of court and the accuser pleaded no contest to making a false police report. Righeimer's most controversial action was when he orchestrated the removal of appointed mayor Katrina Foley with the help of fellow councilmembers Allan Mansoor and Sandra "Sandy" Genis in November 2017. The farewell ceremony took place at the Costa Mesa Senior Conference Center in Costa Mesa, California on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. Video is seven minutes long.
