Grand jury adds charges to Oxford rape suspect

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) - A Butler County grand jury added to charges faces by a Miami University groundskeeper accused of attacking a student. Brandon Gilbert now faces charges of rape, attempted rape, kidnapping and felonious assault.

An Oxford police officer says he was on a traffic stop at South Poplar Street and Ardmore Drive at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday when he heard a woman screaming.

As he got out of his cruiser, he saw her running toward him. The Miami University student told him she'd been sexually assaulted in a yard by a man she'd just met. She didn't know his name.

The officer said she was covered with leaves and dead grass and her belt was undone. She had visible marks on her ear where she told the officer her attacker had hit her and marks on her knuckles where she said she tried to fight him off.

Gilbert was arrested a short time later. After his indictment, a judge ordered him held on $75,000 bond.

Miami University has suspended Gilbert without pay.
