Local Ripple Effect of Gas Price Hike

You already know that gas prices have risen nearly 50 cents in the last month. We've discovered new evidence that that hike means you'll probably be paying more elsewhere. Local pizza delivery places say, the price hike has got them rethinking their delivery fees.If the prices continue to go up it could continue to affect them, said Paul Neumaier, the owner of Jet's Pizza on Hixson Pike. And like most business owners, he's keeping an eye on gas prices.The flat fee right now for delivery is $2.50, and he says it hasn't changed in probably five years. Half goes to the delivery driver, and the other half goes to Jet's to pay for extra car insurance.Neumaier says gas prices would have to go up about another dollar for it to have an effect on delivery fees.And that could be in our future - with gas in some places on Hixson Pike hovering around $3.60.Right now, driver Angie DeMarcus says her $1.25 share is cutting it, but barely. Your $1.25 is just about going to pay for your gas if you figure that in. And then of course you have oil changes, maintenance, and things like that, but that's  stuff you're going to do naturally, but you're going to have to do it a little more because you're putting more miles on your car, said DeMarcus.But drivers say they do whatever they can to make sure each gallon goes the extra mile, because holding out for the best price on the road is sometimes not an option.Overall, Neumaier says rising fuel prices could mean less rising dough. If people are spending more on gas, that's discretionary income, that they're going to have less to spend at a restaurant, a pizza place, or tipping the drivers, and I think that's as much of an effect as anything, said Neumaier.And of course pizza place aren't the only ones who could see a price hike. You also have to consider places like the postal service and landscaping companies.By Natalie Jenereski
