The iconic Champaran Satyagraha turns 101 years on Tuesday today. A lot of things have changed during decades but the plight of oppressed remains the same. Still today Dalits are abused, harassed and killed, Dalit women are picked up, gang-raped. Champaran Satyagraha, which has been termed as India’s first civil disobedience movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi against injustice by Britishers on farmers. To commemorate the anniversary of the Champaran Satyagraha movement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited East Champaran in Bihar and addressed over 20,000 swachhagrahis from across the country.

India’s first civil disobedience movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi to protest against the injustice against farmers in Champaran district of Bihar

During British rule, many farmers were forced to grow indigo on part of their land, often working under oppressive conditions

The protests and strikes against the landlords eventually came to an end with the abolition of indigo cultivation (Tinkathia system) 

Indigo was used as a dye.

The movement continued and Gandhiji succeeded in shaping public frustration into a viable political tool
