HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) - A Trenton police officer was sent to the hospital and his cruiser was badly damaged in an apparent distracted driving accident Tuesday evening.

Trenton Police said on its Facebook page that the officer was returning to Trenton after taking an inmate to Hamilton at about 7:45. A driver turned left directly in front of the officer, causing the crash. Police say the driver admitted to looking at his cell phone at the time of the accident.

Police say the officer was released from the hospital and expects to return to work.
