Counselors meet with children after Winton Hills chain-reaction crash involving bus

WINTON HILLS, Ohio (WKRC) - Only one of the children injured in a crash involving a school bus and three cars remains in the hospital. The 12-year-old injured on the bus remains in critical condition.

Charges are pending against the driver of a car who caused the serious chain reaction crash that injured more than a dozen students.

Officers say that driver tried to pass another when he rear-ended another car on Winton Road, sending into the path of the school bus. The school bus spun and hit another car and a utility pole.

The students on the bus were being taken home from Pleasant Hill Academy. The 12-year-old girl who was critically injured was in a coma at last check. She also had internal bleeding and a broken pelvis.

Ambulances took 11 children to the hospital. Parents took nine more children there. 

Two children in the rear-ended car that was hit by the school bus were also taken to the hospital A toddler was thrown from the car. Police say they're both recovering at home.

The crash involved the school bus and three other vehicles.

The most seriously hurt student is getting support from her classmates.

At last check, the 12-year-old girl was still in critical condition, but on Tuesday night, classmates are keeping her in their thoughts as they wrestle with their own emotions.

There was no doubt a little apprehension on the part of students as they boarded busses to leave Pleasant Hill Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

It was nearly 24 hours after several students on Bus 48, were injured, in a multi-vehicle crash on Winton Road.

School Principal Shauna McDowell remembers the frantic crash scene.

On Tuesday, students made cards for their sixth-grade classmate who remains hospitalized. While they wrote well wishes, some met with counselors who were on hand to speak with students about their fears and concerns.

While many of the Pleasant Hill Students were eager to board the bus to get home, there are no doubt some concerned about that next bus ride.

Police say the crash could have been much worse. The bus could have turned over.

In the wake of a frantic scene, the Pleasant Hill Academy community has come together as one.

Shauna McDowell says more than half of the students who normally ride Bus 48 stayed home on Tuesday. Some were still a little sore from the crash and some just needed time.

The principal says everyone was getting an even tighter hug on Tuesday.

Cincinnati Police say they are continuing to piece together details as to what led up to the crash which shut down Winton Road for several hours on Monday.
