Four checks to pass for a bearing to be sound: 1 Its age or mileage and its run condition should indicate useful time of life is left in it. 2 Should appear visually flawless everywhere, particularly at the raceways 3 Should run without discernible vibration. 4 Should be making no course sounds. Running sound is inevitable as metal surfaces strike and slide on each other but changes or interruptions beyond running sound (clackety) is indicating the balls rolling over internal surface imperfections.
