Nearly nine thousand African migrants were rescued over the Easter holiday weekend in 65 different search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.
The search and rescue operations involved 35 vessels contributed by NGO's, the Italian coastguard and also Frontex - the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. At least 900 people have died or gone missing while attempting to reach Europe by sea so far this year. In a separate incident the Spanish coast guard said it rescued 58 African migrants travelling in two separate dinghy boats on Sunday in the Alboran Sea which is the most western portion of the Mediterranean Sea. U.N. aid agencies say that migrants have begun setting out from Libya anew, on unseaworthy boats heading towards Italy especially now that the weather is calm.
