EPZ workers may earn better wages as union, government talks conclude

Workers at the Export Processing Zones may soon earn better wages, once the government concludes discussions with employers and union officials to review their pay. Currently, EPZ workers earn an average of 14,319 shillings a month compared to their expatriate colleagues who take home 103,157 shillings per month. This pay disparity has caused whispers of discrimination, with workers threatening to down their tools a number of times. A report by the Export Promotion Zones Authority indicates that the zones employ more than 50,000 local workers, and only 604 foreigners. Labour Minister Ukur Yattani says is looking into the workers' concerns.
