Peter Lindemann explains open system thermodynamics, starting from Ilya Prigogine, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1977 for his work on dissipative structures and whose finding was that systems far from equilibrium do not obey the minimum principles that hold near it. He separates organizing energy from dissipating it, then works a concrete example: an ordinary desktop still boils water with mains power and then spends more power throwing the heat away, while a regenerative still uses the heat of condensation to preheat the incoming water and produces seven to eight times more distilled water for the same input. His argument is that the standard efficiency model is already an open system on the output side.
