A glass or plastic container, hot and cold water, food coloring and cooking oil are needed. I will use a ladle to help pour the water into the container. The cold water was refrigerated. It is at 41 degrees Fahrenheit and dyed yellow. The hot water is from the tap. It is at 116 degrees Fahrenheit and dyed blue. Water over 120 F is too hot to safely handle. The oil is at 74 degrees and is used to help prevent the hot and cold water mixing together. Density can be calculated by mass/volume. p = m/V. The density of water at 41 F is 8.345 lb/gallon (999.97 kg/m3) and the density of water at 116 F is 8.258 lb/gallon (989.51 kg/m3).

The less dense hot water will float on the more dense colder water. The cold water goes in first. Next is the oil. The oil is less dense than both the cold and hot water and the oil can help prevent the hot and cold water mixing. Now, the hot water goes in. Some of the hot water ends up mixing with the cold water. The liquids are layered into cold water, mixed water of temperature greater than the cold water and less than the hot water, followed by the hot water, and oil.
