Written by City News Service - A speeding Mercedes smashed into a pickup truck
driven by a 72-year-old man as he turned into a driveway in the Mid-City
section of Los Angeles, and the driver was killed, police said today.
   The motorist ran into the night, but has been identified, said Los
Angeles police officer Sung Yoon of the West Traffic Division. His name was not
released.
   Paramedics rushed Douglas Gerald Welch to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,
where he was later pronounced dead, Yoon said.
   The crash was around 10:40 p.m. Friday in the 2100 block of West
Boulevard, south of Pico Boulevard and north of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway.
   Welch was going north on West Boulevard in a blue 1981 Dodge pickup
truck, attempting to make a left turn into a private driveway, when his vehicle
was struck by a silver 2000 Mercedes-Benz C500 going southbound, Yoon said.
   The Mercedes then hit a pole. It came to a stop on the lawn of a nearby
home with the pole on top of the vehicle, a witness told a news photographer at
the scene.
   Three people exited the Mercedes and ran, the witness said.LOUDLABS NEWS
