Microsoft Excel Tutorial:  Power of Macros in Excel: Find the Macro Recorder & More in the Developer Tab!

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we'll be discussing the whereabouts of the macro recorder in Excel. If you're familiar with Excel 2003, you may remember that the macro recorder was located under TOOLS, MACRO, and had a variety of commands such as changing security settings and accessing the Visual Basic Editor. However, when we move on to Excel 2007, it seems like the macro recorder has disappeared. So, where did it go?

Well, fear not, because the macro recorder is still available in Excel 2007 and beyond. It has just been relocated to a different location. Instead of being under TOOLS, it can now be found under the DEVELOPER tab. But wait, you may be thinking, I don't see a DEVELOPER tab in my Excel ribbon. Don't worry, we'll show you how to enable it in just a few simple steps.

To access the DEVELOPER tab, click on the OFFICE button and then go to Excel OPTIONS. From there, click on the third checkmark that says SHOW DEVELOPER TAB IN THE RIBBON. Once you click OK, you'll now have a brand new tab called DEVELOPER in your Excel ribbon. This tab will give you access to the macro recorder and other useful tools for creating and editing macros.

Now that we've found the macro recorder, let's take a quick tour of the DEVELOPER tab. The VISUAL BASIC button will take you directly to the Visual Basic Editor, while the MACROS button will give you a list of all your macros. You can also record a new macro or use relative references, which is a key feature for making your macros work effectively. Additionally, you can adjust your macro security settings under the MACRO SECURITY button.

But that's not all! The DEVELOPER tab also gives you access to FORM CONTROLS and ACTIVEX CONTROLS, which are useful for creating interactive spreadsheets. And if you're working with XML, you'll be happy to know that there's a new XML pane on the right-hand side of the tab.
