Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Number a List of Items

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we'll be discussing a cool Excel trick and also trying out a little experiment with Twitter. But first, I have to ask, did you get a new iPod for Christmas? If so, congratulations! And if you're watching this on your new iPod, thank you for tuning in.

Now, let's talk about Twitter. Are you a Twitter person? If so, let's try something fun. A few weeks ago, I was at a Neil Young concert and I tweeted about it. Later, I searched for Neil Young on Twitter and found a few other people who were also at the concert and tweeting about it. So, let's do the same thing with this podcast. If you're stuck working on the day after Christmas, go to Twitter and tweet that you're watching the MrExcel.com podcast. Make sure to include the hashtag #MrExcelPodcast. Then, a few hours later, go to search.twitter.com and search for #MrExcelPodcast. Let's see who else on Twitter is watching the podcast. Maybe we can start following each other and have some fun conversations about Excel.

Now, let's switch back to Excel. In this episode, we'll be discussing a cool trick that came up during one of my classes. Someone needed to number a list of items, but they were constantly deleting and adding items, causing reference errors in their numbering system. So, I'll be showing you an alternate way to number items in Excel that will automatically adjust when items are added or deleted.

We'll be using the COUNT and TRUECOUNT functions to create a formula that counts the number of cells above the current cell and adds 1 to it. This way, when items are added or deleted, the numbering will automatically adjust without any errors. It's a simple but effective solution that will save you time and frustration.

And finally, I want to thank you for watching the MrExcel podcast. If you're watching this on the day after Christmas, I'm sorry that you're working. But, I have a special deal for you. If you didn't receive any cool MrExcel merchandise for Christmas, I'm offering a secret bundle deal. If you purchase either the Live Lessons 2003 or Live Lessons 2007, you'll receive the MrExcel podcast DVD for free. This DVD contains the first 630 episodes of the podcast, all searchable and easily accessible. Just go to mrexcel.com/podcast916.html (all lowercase) to access this secret deal. And don't forget to share the podcast with your friends and colleagues. Thank you for tuning in and we'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
