Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel netcast, where we share all the latest and greatest Excel tricks and tips. In today's episode, we're going to tackle a question that has been on my mind for a while now - why do new Excel workbooks always come with three worksheets? It seems like a waste of space and time, especially when we're used to having the option to choose the number of sheets in older versions of Excel. So, let's dive in and find out why this is the default setting and how we can change it.

First off, let me introduce you to our new theme - "Born to Excel" by George Wood. As we enter 2009, I've made a resolution to fully embrace Excel 2007 and all its features. And one thing that has been bugging me is the fact that every time I create a new workbook, I get three sheets by default. It's been almost two years since the release of Excel 2007, so it's about time we get used to it and make the necessary changes to suit our preferences.

So, let's get to the solution. If you have Excel 2007, simply go to the Office icon, then Excel Options, and under the first tab, "Include this many sheets", change the number to one. It's that simple! You can also choose to change the default font to your liking, but I personally prefer to stick with the Body Font assigned to the theme. This way, if I change the theme, the font will automatically change as well. Once you click OK and restart Excel, you'll see that new workbooks will only have one sheet, making it more efficient and less cluttered.

But wait, there's more! Excel 2007 has made it even easier to add new worksheets. Instead of going to the Insert menu, you can simply click on the New Worksheet icon at the bottom of the screen. This saves us time and effort, and it's a feature that I'm sure you'll appreciate. So, there you have it - a simple solution to a seemingly silly default setting.
