MIAMI VALLEY -- The mayor of Toledo, Michael Collins, is in critical condition after suffering a heart attack over the weekend. On Sunday, Collins was headed home from a news conference on the city's snow emergency when he lost consciousness and slammed into a utility pole. Two witnesses passing the scene smashed his windows out and began CPR. On Monday, we talked with the Dayton chapter of the American Red Cross as they push to teach 5 million people about the hands only approach to CPR. The CPR approach uses only the hands, instead of the traditional method of mouth to mouth. Their hope is to reach people who won't come in to a class to be trained with a certificate. Nick Gill, with the Dayton chapter, said there's three easy steps: check, call, care. He advises anyone in a dire situation to check the scene and the victim, call 911 for help, and administer CPR using your hands. "You want to find the spot right in the middle of the breast bone, we use the heel of our hand, keeping fingers up off the chest," said Gill. He went on to explain you want to keep your shoulder over the center of the chest while pressing down at least 2 inches.
