Phillip Sear plays a somewhat fervid pastorale from 1919 by the Flemish composer Lodewijk Mortelmans (1868-1952).

Lodewijk Mortelmans (1868-1952) was one of the leading Flemish composers of the last century. He was a pupil of Peter Benoit in Antwerp, and later taught for many years at the Antwerp Conservatory. Mortelmans uses a very conservative idiom, but sudden key changes in many of his works show him as a 20th century composer. His piano writing shows considerable craftsmanship and the accompanying figures are carefully thought out.  This pastorale (from September 1919) is unusual in that rather than being the usual gentle evocation of rural scenes, this is more like a depiction of a romp in the hay.  Maybe it reflects the composer's relief at the end of the First World War less than a year earlier.  My thumbnail shows 'The Lovers' by the French artist Henri Martin (1860-1943).
