#3, 5 from 'Tone Pictures from Foreign Lands' (1927) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Evan Marsden' is a pseudonym for the flamboyant Australian conductor and entertainer Eric Pechotsch (1891-1960) - better-known under another pseudonym: Eric Mareo . Mareo also composed under the name Edgar Martell. Mareo was noted, inter alia, for conducting with a tinselled baton. Mareo's colourful life included a period in England in the 1910s as pianist in a pierrot show. However, his musical life came to an abrupt halt in 1936 when he was imprisoned for the murder by poisoning of his actress wife Thelma. He seemed to specialize in exotic-themed descriptive suites - I have already recorded pieces by him with Arab scenarios. The first of the two pieces here (subtitled 'Kenya Station') sounds to me more like a Norwegian country dance with Hardanger fiddles playing than anything African. The second (subtitled Delhi, 1912) is slightly more authentically exotic. They are both fun pieces nevertheless!
