Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Master Excel Functions: Find Second Smallest Value & Sort Data. Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we're going to tackle a common problem faced by many Excel users - finding the second smallest value in a data set. I recently encountered this question during my seminar at the IMA national meeting in Denver, and I'm excited to share the solution with you. So, how do we find the second smallest value in a data set? Of course, we all know how to find the smallest value using the MIN function. But what about the second smallest? This is where the SMALL function comes in. By simply specifying the range and the position of the value we want (in this case, the second smallest), we can easily retrieve the desired result. But that's not all - the SMALL function has even more tricks up its sleeve. Not only can it help us find the second smallest value, but it can also be used to sort a data set without actually sorting the original data. This is a great way to analyze and organize your data without altering the original set. And if you like SMALL, you'll also love LARGE - a function that helps you find the second largest, third largest, and so on. I hope you found this tip helpful and will be able to use it in your own Excel projects.
